Privacy
Short version: your searches go from your browser to the Library of Congress, not to us. We keep a waitlist email if you give us one, and anonymous counts.
Your searches
The words, years and places you search for are sent by your browser directly to the Library of Congress (www.loc.gov and tile.loc.gov), which answers with the matching pages, OCR files and images. The Library sees those requests the way it sees any visit to loc.gov; its privacy policy covers them. Clipping File never receives your search terms.
The search is also in the address bar of this page, so you can bookmark or share it. If you share the link, whoever opens it sees the search.
What we count
To know whether anyone uses this, the page sends us small anonymous events: that a page was viewed, that a search ran, how long the first clipping took, that a PDF or a clipping was downloaded or a citation copied. Each event is the kind of event, the page path, a number where one applies, and the date. It does not include what you searched for, your IP address or any identifier, and we set no cookies. We store daily totals only.
The site is served by Cloudflare, which handles the network traffic (and so sees IP addresses) to deliver the pages; we don't receive or keep them. Cloudflare also adds its Web Analytics script to the pages, which counts visits without cookies and without the words you search for (how it works).
The waitlist
If you type your email into "tell me when the dossier opens", we keep that address and the date, and we'll send one email when the paid dossier goes on sale. Nothing else, no newsletter, never shared or sold. To have it deleted, email aaonvsaaon@gmail.com from that address.
Payments
Nothing is for sale yet. When the dossier opens, payment will be taken by a reseller that handles the card and sales tax; this page will be updated to name it before anything can be bought.
Storage on your device
Your browser keeps a light/dark choice and a count of recent requests to the Library (so this page stays inside the Library's limits) in local storage, and caches the scans and OCR files it downloaded, like any web page. Clearing site data removes all of it.
